The Cost Of Family Fragmentation

One of the few facts liberal and conservative researchers agree upon about family composition is that children do better when they grow up in a family with their own two biological parents.  In 1970, that was the circumstance for about 85 percent of American youth.  Today this circumstance describes the family structure of only 68 percent of American youth.  The resulting poverty -- family structure is strongly, strongly correlated to poverty in American -- costs the American taxpayer at least $112 billion annually, or more than a trillion dollars every decade, according to a new study released today, not to mention the untold human suffering.

The Indiana Family Institute is pleased to release the Indiana facts from this 50-state, first-ever estimate of the taxpayers costs of family fragmentation.  For the Hoosier State, the costs are at least $839 million annually, or 10.7 percent of the total tax burden.

We will formally unveil the findings at a 1 p.m. press conference in the Statehouse with State Sen. Luke Kenley, chair of the State Senate Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee.  He has received a briefing on the report and said he will hold hearings on the findings next year.

We trust this effort by a group of dedicated academics and researchers will help policymakers at all levels of government -- federal, state and local --develop family strengthening policies.  Chief among the most promising new approaches being tried around the nation is marriage education efforts.  There will be more news in the Hoosier State about this in the coming weeks.
