Christmas and the White House

Did you see the president’s address at the National Christmas Tree Lighting last Thursday?

In their first tree lighting ceremony as residents of the White House, the president and first lady welcomed in the Christmas season at President’s Park, where the National Christmas Tree is displayed.

President Trump’s address, which followed the tree lighting, is being praised for its unambiguous references to the indispensable role of families in maintaining a happy and healthy society, the importance of Christmas, and the influence of Christianity in American institutions and culture.

“It's my tremendous honor to finally wish America and the world a very Merry Christmas,” President Trump said as he began his remarks.

During his address, President Trump recognized the historical importance of Christmas in American life: “From the earliest days of our nations, Americans have known Christmas as a time for prayer and worship, for gratitude and good will, for peace and renewal.”

President Trump proceeded to acknowledge the religious and theological importance of the Christmas season. “For Christians, this is a Holy season – the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The Christmas story begins 2,000 years ago with a mother, a father, their baby son, and the most extraordinary gift of all, the gift of God's love for all of humanity.”

“Whatever our beliefs, we know that the birth of Jesus Christ and the story of this incredible life forever changed the course of human history. There’s hardly an aspect of our lives today that his life has not touched: art, music, culture, law, and our respect for the sacred dignity of every person everywhere in the world,” he said.

The president also tipped his hat to families, whom he affirmed as “the bedrock of American life.”

The president’s timely remarks serve as a good reminder of the reasons why we celebrate Christmas. If you’re interested in watching the ceremony, a video of it is available for viewing on the White House’s YouTube page.

Thank you, President Trump, for recognizing the role that families play in our society, and the role that Christ plays in the Christmas season.
